1.Know About Khasra Number

Khasra number is a Persian term given to a particular piece of land in villages. It is like a plot or survey number of urban areas. Plot numbers are assigned to each and every piece of land in urban areas and in a similar way a numerical identification is assigned to agricultural land in rural areas. Authorities of the village assign a Khasra number to every land parcel of that village. They carry the map of the village when they assign the khasra number. This number provides all the details pertaining to a particular plot, like its area, measurement, if it is fertile, details of its owners and cultivators, types of crops, its soil, kind of crop cultivated on that land, the number of trees planted etc. Shajra is a document that carries the entire map of the village and Khasra is just a part of it. Khasra number can provide the entire ownership history and pattern of a particular plot, even up to 50 years back.

A person appointed by the Revenue Department, Lekhpal, is responsible for preparing all the local land revenue documents and the village patwari assists the lekhpal in keeping these documents updated.  A khasra number doesn’t always remain the same for a particular plot. This number will change if that plot is gifted, divided or sold and mutation takes place after the transaction. Suppose a plot is given a khasra number 40. It is later divided into two parts by mutation, then the new khasra numbers for the new plots formed after mutation will be 40/1 and 40/2 accordingly.

2.What is Khata Number

Khata number also known as Khewat number is an account number given to landowners who jointly own a land parcel. It is the number allotted to a family to denote the entire landholding of all the members of that family. This number provides the details of owners and their total landholding. Members of a family holding land with different khasra number will have the same khata number. This number is given by the revenue officials to owners who form a set of co-sharers who own the land in the same or different proportions. We can also say that it is an account number given to different owners in the same Khewat.

3.Khatauni Number is also Necessary

This is a type of account number that provides information on the land-holding pattern within a family. It is a legal document that provides the information about a land, its Khasra number, the number of people who own it, its total area etc. In general, it is the record of all khasras owned by a family. As a Khata number or a Khewat number refers to a set of owners, similarly the Khatauni number refers to a set of cultivators. One could visit the village tehsil or the Jan-suvidha centre to get the Khatauni number. As the revenue department has digitalized the information in most of the states, one could also get the Katauni number on the official website of the revenue department of that particular state.

4.Conclusion

Khasra number gives an identity to land parcels or plots of rural areas. It is important to keep a track of these immovable assets because any change will reflect in the land holding pattern through this Khasra number. Most of the states have made it easy for the citizens as they provide this information online. It has become very easy to check the land records online. Khasra is actually a part of another important document of the revenue department called Shajra which carries the map of the entire village. Rights of Records also known as Fard or Jamabandi holds the khasra number as one of the details in it. As every piece of land has a plot number in the urban areas, khasra number is a similar identification number allotted to agricultural land in rural areas. Khasra number is allotted by the concerned authorities to every piece of land in a village. The village map is used to allocate khasra numbers. These numbers offer all minute details in regard to their regions and areas, types of soil, crops, cultivators etc. One can get complete ownership of the pattern and the history of a particular piece of land and this history can even date back to 50 years. On the other hand, Khata number or Khewat number is an account number that is allotted to a family and this number represents the entire landholdings of that family. Changes in this number happen only with the change in ownership.

Khatauni number provides the details about the land-holding pattern within a family. It serves as an important tool to check the status of land ownership in villages. It also plays a crucial role at the time of purchase or sale of the property. As a legal document it provides the information about the land-holding pattern within a family. These pieces of land which are owned by different members of the family can be together or in different places. This legal document provides information about the land, its khasra numbers, the number of people owning it, its area etc. In fact Katauni is the record of all the Khasras owned by a family. Khasra is a small unit whereas Katauni is the record of many such units in a family. As most of the states have digitalized land records, one can easily get the details of their Khasra, khata or Katauni number by logging into the official land records website.
